A Bellevue police officer who was placed on leave in June for social media posts promoting conspiracy theories, including ones related to George Floyd’s killing, has been reinstated to full duty.

Officer Nicolas Roche was placed on administrative leave after several Twitter users found Roche’s social media profiles, which were both then deleted, and shared posts to Bellevue police. Roche retweeted a post that falsely claimed the cops responsible in George Floyd’s death were not the ones that were arrested, and posted a selfie in police gear with a caption connected to “QAnon,” a wide ranging conspiracy theory alleging a secret plot against President Donald Trump.

Bellevue police hired an independent fact-finding investigator to review the officer’s social media posts, who stated in a release from police that “there is absence of evidence suggesting that Ofc. Roche ascribes to or harbors alt-right or extremist beliefs, or any other improper ideologies or biases that call into question his fitness to serve as a law enforcement officer.”

The investigator called the posts “ill-advised and imprudent.”

Bellevue Police Chief Steve Mylett found the officer in violation of the department’s standard of conduct policy 11.00.240: “Employees will, at all times, exercise caution and good judgment.” The officer has a letter of reprimand on his file as a result.

“In this case, the investigator determined no impartiality, but the officer’s social media activity was in poor judgment and in violation of BPD policy,” Mylett stated.
