Nesta Cooper is bringing the story of activist and author Kemba Smith to the screen in “Kemba.” Directed by Kelley Kali for MPI Original Films and BET, “Kemba” is a drama inspired by the true events of Smith’s biography – at just 24, she was sentenced to 24.5 years in federal prison for participating in her boyfriend’s drug operation, despite being a first-time, nonviolent offender – as well as her lifelong project of criminal justice reform in America.
