World Cup Sent Vancouver Matchday Spending Up 12.7%

The FIFA World Cup delivered a measurable matchday boost to Vancouver businesses, according to new Visa data that found in-person spending rose by as much as 12.7% compared with the same period in 2025.

Vancouver’s largest increase came on June 13, when Australia faced Türkiye. Card-present spending that day was 12.7% higher than average daily spending during the comparable tournament window a year earlier.

Canada’s group-stage match against Qatar on June 18 also lifted spending in Vancouver by 4.9%, underscoring the ability of major national-team moments to draw fans into restaurants, shops, and other local businesses.

Visa described the concentrated bursts of activity surrounding matches as temporary “pop-up economies,” with stadium crowds and international visitors generating opportunities for merchants throughout Canada’s two host cities.

Toronto recorded an even larger surge during the tournament. Spending climbed 24.6% on June 20, when Germany played Côte d’Ivoire, marking the strongest matchday increase identified by Visa across the two Canadian markets.

Canada hosted 13 World Cup matches across Vancouver and Toronto. Visa analyzed card-present spending in both cities throughout the tournament to assess how activity changed around individual games.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 showed how the power of sport brings people together and creates real economic opportunity for Canadian communities,” said Michiel Wielhouwer, President and Country Manager of Visa Canada.

Wielhouwer said the spending reflected fans supporting local businesses and visitors exploring the host cities, while digital payments helped merchants handle the concentrated demand created by one of the world’s largest sporting events.

Visa also used its Canadian Tap In campaign to extend the tournament beyond the pitch through fan experiences and initiatives supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The figures offer an early snapshot of the World Cup’s effect on commerce rather than a complete estimate of its economic impact. Visa’s analysis was limited to card-present spending and did not include total dollar volumes, online transactions, cash purchases, or payments processed through other networks.

Still, the data suggests major sporting events can produce immediate gains for host-city businesses, even when the biggest spending day does not feature the home team. In Vancouver, the Australia–Türkiye match generated a larger increase than Canada’s appearance five days later.

For a city that welcomed international fans while putting itself on a global stage, the tournament’s legacy will extend beyond the matches. Visa’s spending data indicates that, at least on game days, some of that impact was felt directly at local tills.
