Puget Sound Book Festival

The Puget Sound Book Festival bills itself as the “supersized, all-ages book fair of your dreams.” Located on the Bremerton waterfront, it features over a dozen indie bookstores in one place, plus author appearances and food and drink vendors. Participating booksellers include the romance bookstore Wicked Words, the sci-fi-and-fantasy-leaning Little Lost BookShoppe & Beyond, the mobile bookstore Lost the Plot, indie press and design studio Arledge Comics, and traveling pop-up arts and crafts bookstore Overnight Craft Society, and more. There’s an author in attendance for every kind of reader: Patricia Wants to Cuddle author Samantha Allen, ice hockey goalie and romance author Dr. Lexi LaFleur Brown, speculative fiction author Fonda Lee, and feminist horror author G.G. Silverman, to name just a few. Spend a leisurely afternoon strolling the boardwalk and loading up your tote bag with more books than you could possibly read in a lifetime. I devoured Seattle journalist and author Samantha Allen’s 2022 razor-sharp dark comedy/horror novel Patricia Wants to Cuddle, which follows the four finalists on a Bachelor-type reality dating show called The Catch, filmed on a fictional Pacific Northwest island called “Otters Island.” Things take a turn when the cast and crew run into a cult that worships a giant female Sasquatch. I’m thrilled to see Allen return to the reality TV realm with her latest novel, Puck, a modern riff on A Midsummer Night’s Dream that reimagines the mischievous title character as a pot-stirring nonbinary dating show producer. Puck’s friend group is upended when their college roommate Mia gets engaged to her ex’s best friend Damon. Secretly, Puck takes it upon themself to save the day by matchmaking their friends into new couples, all while falling for a bridesmaid. Obviously, hijinks ensue!
