Wildfire Season Peak Prompts Rogers to Offer Free Satellite Service Across B.C.

With wildfires impacting areas of British Columbia, the Province recently declared a state of emergency.

In response, Rogers Communications confirmed that it has opened up its Rogers Satellite service free province-wide for all wireless customers.

“We’re committed to helping British Columbians affected by these devastating wildfires,” stated Rogers chief executive officer Tony Staffieri.

Rogers Satellite provides connectivity where traditional cell coverage is not available, which can keep customers connected if a cellular tower is down because of damage from a wildfire, for example.

“Our teams are working around the clock to help keep people connected,” commented Staffieri.

In addition to text messaging and text-to-911, Rogers Satellite supports satellite-ready apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger, and Google Maps on compatible devices.

“As the only Canadian carrier with satellite-to-mobile technology … Rogers is providing an added layer of connectivity where it’s needed,” Staffieri remarked, “helping families reach loved ones and first responders stay connected on the job.”

Staffieri says Rogers is also matching new donations to the Canadian Red Cross 2026 British Columbia Wildfires Appeal, while supporting customers who have been evacuated from their homes by crediting Rogers home services for the duration of the evacuation period.

In a similar move, Telus also committed $2 million. The Vancouver company’s capital is earmarked for data top-ups, bill credits, and donations to local charities.

Earlier this year, Rogers upgraded its network throughout in Vancouver via a $5M investment ahead of the World Cup, including additional 5G+ spectrum and technology at BC Place—a move which builds on the $10M network investment Rogers made in the venue ahead of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour.
