Editor’s note: A series of unfortunate events—sickness, logistical nightmares, emergencies (we’re fine)—struck the Stranger this week, which made reshuffling the Slog AM schedule necessary. Well, a certain fool editor dropped the fucking cards, and two people wrote Slog AM this morning. So, for the first and last time, we’re proud to present Bonus Slog and/or Slog Mid-AM. We haven’t given much thought to the name because, with any luck, we won’t have to.
You love to see it: “It is clear the MAGA base is now deserting [Trump] in record numbers,” writes the Hill, citing a poll showing Trump’s approval rating has reached an all-time low of 29 percent. Of course, none of that matters if the fasc-hole locks himself in the new bunker ballroom and refuses to leave come January 2029, but it’s nice to see people are continuing to turn on him, especially before the midterms.
Washington wants your babies: Wait, that sounds creepy. What I mean to say is that Governor Bob Ferguson’s office announced Monday that the state is expanding the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program to provide free preschool for thousands more children from low-income families.
Here comes the dark. The last 7 p.m. sunset of the year will be Friday.
Big news in Bagel Land: Hey Bagel (coincidentally founded and owned by Andrew Rubinstein, who founded Rubinstein Bagels, which closed its Capitol Hill location this week) will open a second location in West Seattle next year. He posted the, ahem, hole story on Instagram.
Your Move, Mayor Wilson: New York’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced this morning that the city is giving away 70,000 tickets to the Metropolitan Opera House. Just look at this charismatic fuck.
More Starbucks closures coming: The company is closing 250 “underperforming cafes,” though they’re not saying exactly which ones and where. Earlier this year, five Seattle locations closed, four of them unionized. In related news: Starbucks Workers United are still asking people to boycott.
The Mariners’ post-season dreams aren’t shattered yet!?
If you feel like screaming today, you can watch the Senate question Trump’s FDA nominee Dr. Heidi Overton about her plans for vaccines and abortion pills. Here’s a little taste, featuring Bernie Sanders:
There’s no statute of limitations on genocide. A 105-year-old man is being investigated in Germany for “being an accessory to multiple murders at a Nazi prisoner of war camp,” according to The Guardian. Prosecutors say the man “is thought to have been a guard at the prisoner of war camp Stalag 326 VI K in the Senne region of western Germany.”
CDs are so back: Have you read this week’s installment of Pop Loser? Not only does Stranger arts writer Audrey Vann pay her respects to birthday girl Joan Jett, but she also breaks down this week’s important music-related news, including the latest on Macklemore and Ed Sheeran, and CD sales, which are up! Up! In this economy! It’s 2000 all over again.
In Macklemore news: He announced a Free Palestine Tour.
In Ed Sheeran news: He’s still a loser.
I want to leave you with one last thought. CANDY! CORN! IS! GOOD!
