The Renton School District has put out a statement that the entire Hazen High School football season has not been canceled, despite an online report following one forfeited game.
A recent article written on Mason Kelley’s “Spilled Ink” Substack reported that Hazen had canceled its football season. When the Renton Reporter reached out to the district to confirm the report, an emailed statement from Renton School District Athletic Director Jesse Snyder said that Hazen will continue its league season as scheduled.
“Reports that we have cancelled the rest of the season are not accurate, no such decision has been made at this time. A single game was forfeited due to a lack of available players caused by injuries, attrition, and academic suspensions,” Snyder said.
The statement comes after Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way canceled its season last week in a report by The Federal Way Mirror.
Hazen was slated to play Bellevue on Oct. 2, which was the Wolverine’s homecoming game. Following the forfeit, Kelley’s column read headline read: “Hazen cancels rest of its season.”
“Bellevue was supposed to play Hazen in its homecoming game at 7 p.m. tonight, but that game will not be played after Hazen has canceled the rest of its season,” said Kelley, who noted that he did not have details about Hazen’s situation and did not want to speculate about what had happened.
It has been a rough go for first-year head coach Marcus Carr who took over for Chris Bennett at Hazen. Bennett had left the program abruptly during summer camp in August.
Carr and the team has a had a tough start this season. The Highlanders are in the best division in KingCo, the KingCo crown. Hazen is just 0-1 in league play but was beaten 69-0 by Mount Si on Sept. 25. The Highlanders are 0-4 this season and are leading the entire KingCo regardless of classification in points allowed per game with 45.8. Redmond is behind them, with 39.8 points per game allowed, but it plays in the lowest division in KingCo.
On offense it is not much better for the Highlanders. Hazen has a points per game average of 7.8, the second fewest points per game behind Evergreen who averages under four points in its four games this season.
With the Bellevue game as a forfeit, Hazen will next play Issaquah on Oct. 9. Both Hazen and Issaquah could be looking for its first win in league play.
