It’s happening again: We’ve rolled out our temporary walls to mount a one-night exhibition at the office! We want to keep the love train going for our 2026 Genius Award winners, so this month, we’re showcasing artists from Actualize AiR. Come see work by Hannah Walker, María Zamora, Sanoe Stevenson-Egeland, Lila Alexis Thomas, Colleen Louise Barry, Mary Anne Carter, Kalina Chung, Hannah Simmons, and Baso Fibonacci.
We told them they can do whatever they want, and they delivered a some really good work that showcases the breadth of material and processes taking place at Actualize, like Sanoe Stevenson-Egeland’s acrylic diptych of birds and cocks—flipped and fighting?—rimmed in neon gold with delicious puke-green highlights. Or Lila Alexis Thomas’s epic Jungle Beats (pictured above)—the largest painting we’ve exhibited to date. We’re also very pleased that Kalina Chung will be installing her piece…flowers are not supposed to last, which I wrote about back in August. Chung’s flower (“a big, gangly, awkward thing made of thick, flesh-colored skating tights stretched over a stem-like metal armature”) is a time-based sculpture rooted in a block of ice. As the ice melts, the base erodes. You’ll have to come see it in person to find out what happens next.
(Now, we’ll just have to figure out how to pull it off without a freezer!)
In addition to these and many more works of art, we’re also showcasing our spooky season Cursed Candy table, curated by Stranger Marketing Manager Evanne Hall, who’s been scouring the city for all the weird juice-filled wax bottles and salmon-flavored candy canes she can find. Meanwhile, Megan Seling is amassing a candy corn smorgasbord in an attempt to convert the haters. If that’s you, she’s convinced you just haven’t tried it the right way. (I agree.)
The Stranger office is located on Capitol Hill at 1101 E Pike St. — the entrance is located on 11th Ave E between the Gemini Room and Chophouse Row. Free, 5–8 p.m.
