NASHVILLE, Tenn.— The first Nashville police officer ever charged with murder in an on-duty shooting reached an unexpected deal with prosecutors — mere days before he was set to go to trial.

Andrew Delke, who resigned from the force Thursday, will serve three years on a charge of voluntary manslaughter. He pleaded guilty Friday during a tense and emotional hearing that erupted in outbursts from the victim’s mother and family.

Delke, 27, who is white, shot Daniel Hambrick, a 25-year-old Black man, three times in the back as he ran away after a traffic stop on July 26, 2018.

Delke was charged with first-degree murder in the shooting. Under the terms of the plea agreement, he is

SURFSIDE, Fla. — A 7-year-old daughter of a Miami firefighter was among two additional bodies found overnight in the rubble of the collapsed condo building outside Miami, raising the death toll to 20 with 128 people still missing.

“This tragedy has haunted so many of us because so many of us know somebody who was in the building or affected by this tragedy,” City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said Friday at a news conference. “Now, not only do we know someone, but this is someone who is a member of our family, of our fire family.”

The father was not involved in the recovery process.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava called the night “uniquely

Elsa becomes first hurricane of 2021 Atlantic season; Florida in path early next week

Tropical Storm Elsa strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic storm season on Friday as it battered the eastern Caribbean, where officials closed schools, businesses and airports.

The storm could impact Florida early next week and officials are urging residents there to make preparations.

Friday morning, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he is putting together a potential emergency order as Elsa approaches. DeSantis said South Florida could see tropical storm force winds as soon as Sunday night.

Sustained winds were near 75 mph, making the storm a Category 1 hurricane, according to an 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center. Hurricane Elsa was located 5 miles south of St. Vincent and was moving west-northwest at

Demi Lovato thanks 'queen' Lizzo for correcting a paparazzo who misgendered them

Lizzo is emphasizing the importance of respecting Demi Lovato’s pronouns.

The “Truth Hurts” singer corrected a paparazzo about Lovato’s pronouns in a video posted Thursday by Lovato fan account “Demi Lovato News.” In May, Lovato came out as nonbinary and changed their pronouns to they/them.

During the interaction, Lizzo was asked if she would be performing with Lovato at the upcoming Jazz Fest 2021.

“Do you have a message for Demi? Should she reach out?” the paparazzo asked.

In response, Lizzo corrected his mistake. “They,” she said.

However, the paparazzo once again misgendered Lovato, asking Lizzo, “Has her team contacted your team?”

“Their team,” she corrected quickly. “Demi goes by they.”

Tropical Storm Elsa heads toward Caribbean, could potentially disrupt Florida condo recovery efforts

A westward-moving Tropical Storm Elsa is likely to strengthen into the first hurricane of the 2021 Atlantic season and is expected to unleash heavy rain and strong winds in the Caribbean starting Friday, before approaching the United States next week, Accuweather.com said. South Florida could potentially be in the storm’s path, according to the National Hurricane Center. Though it is too soon to determine what, if any, impacts could occur in Florida next week, officials encouraged residents to monitor the storm and make preparations. This includes crews at the condo that collapsed in Surfside on June 24, where frequent bouts of

J&J says vaccine works against delta variant; WHO pushes Western nations to accept travelers with Chinese vaccines: COVID-19 updates

Concern about thehighly transmissible delta COVID-19 variant and its spread among the unvaccinated continues to grow as U.S. cases rise, but positive news about vaccines’ ability to fight the virus keeps coming.

On Thursday, Johnson & Johnson said its one-dose shot protects against the delta variant, citing lab tests of vaccine recipients’ blood. And amid concern that their shot might require a booster, the company said its immune response lasts eight months and counting.

But public health experts say the variant poses the most danger in regions where vaccinations are sparse.

The variants “are able to find any gaps in our protection,” Dr. Hilary Babcock of Washington University at St. Louis said, pointing to how

Opinion: Brook Lopez's throwback performance helps put Bucks on brink of NBA Finals

0

MILWAUKEE — Brook Lopez had to change his game amid the NBA’s 3-point revolution and become a stretch five, a center who shot and made 3-pointers.

He adapted with skill.

But in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Milwaukee Bucks veteran went back in time to a day when he roamed the paint with dominance.

Lopez scored a playoff career-high 33 points and had seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals in Milwaukee’s 123-112 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday. The win gives the Bucks a 3-2 series lead and puts them one victory from the franchise’s first NBA Finals appearance since 1974.
