Possible tornado sweeps through DC, surrounding areas; thousands of utility customers left without power

A possible tornado swept through the Washington D.C., area Thursday night, passing through the National Mall and disrupting flights at Reagan National Airport.

Forecasters were still trying to determine if the wind damage that occurred in Virginia, the district and Maryland was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning until 9:30 p.m. local time, and said about ten minutes after the warning had expired that the worst of the storms had passed.

“If you are in Arlington, DC, or nearby in the greater metro area: use extreme caution if out and about tonight,” the weather service said on Twitter. “There are likely lots of hanging branches

Workers discovered extensive concrete damage and suspended a repair effort last fall at collapsed Florida condo

SURFSIDE, Florida – When workers from Concrete Protection and Restoration and Morabito Consultants arrived to investigate and remediate work at Champlain Towers South, they found such extensive concrete deterioration and corrosion of reinforcement that some of the repair work couldn’t be performed for fear it might affect the stability of nearby areas.

In a summary of work performed produced by Morabito Consultants on October 13, 2020, the company reported it had discovered several issues, including potentially deep deterioration of concrete near the pool area.

Rescue effort resumes at Florida condo collapse site; demolition of remaining building 'likely'

SURFSIDE, Fla. — Rescue efforts at the site of the collapsed condo building near Miami resumed Thursday afternoon after being suspended around 2 a.m. over concerns about the stability of the remaining tower, officials said.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue tweeted that work continued “after the recommendation of structural engineers who inspected the remaining structure.”

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said work restarted at 4:45 p.m. EDT, and added that plans are underway for the “likely” demolition of the remaining building.

“This is a decision that we need to make extremely carefully and methodically as we consider all the possible impacts to the pile of debris and to our search-and-rescue operation,” Levine Cava said.

Country music power couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill sold their 620-acre farm near Nashville to a new investor group for $15 million. 

The property features the historic Beechwood Hall, built in 1865 and later owned by Hank Williams Sr. 

BKDM, the group that purchased the property, is led by Columbia, Tennessee real estate broker Dan McEwen, and also involves Pinnacle Asset Management Founding Partner and Managing Director Brock Kidd and Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder.

While the group hasn’t yet announced its plans for the property, it hopes to preserve the land’s history and plans to continue searching for other valuable land in Middle Tennessee.

Longtime college football coach Mark Richt diagnosed with Parkinson's disease

Former Georgia and Miami (Fla.) football coach Mark Richt announced Thursday on Twitter that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

“I have been waddling around lately and people have asked me what’s wrong,” Richt, 61, wrote. “I have decided to tell everyone at the same time. I have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

“Truthfully I look at it as a momentarily light affliction compared to the future glory in heaven.”

Richt added that he is “going to enjoy the blessings that I do have” and that he will see TV viewers on the ACC Network, where he has served as a college football analyst since 2019 after retiring from coaching following the 2018
