What is 'reconciliation' and why is it holding up the infrastructure package?

Reconciliation is a special process that essentially makes it easier for legislation to pass the Senate.Reconciliation bills cannot be filibustered; they can be passed by a simple majority. Some Democrats say they won’t fall in line on the bipartisan infrastructure bill without the promise of a reconciliation bill addressing “human infrastructure.”

Amid talks of compromise on a bipartisan infrastructure deal, some Democrats say they won’t fall in line without the promise of another piece of legislation on President Joe Biden’s desk.

“There won’t be an infrastructure bill unless we have a reconciliation bill. Plain and simple,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday, threatening to withhold a House vote on

Scottie Pippen says Phil Jackson drawing up final shot vs. Knicks for Toni Kukoc racially motivated

Scottie Pippen hasn’t been afraid to share his thoughts on a variety of topics surrounding the NBA lately.

In an extensive interview with GQ, published last week, Pippen characterized former Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson’s decision to give rookie Toni Kukoc the final shot of a playoff game against the New York Knicks in 1994 as “racial.” The six-time NBA champion famously refused to go back in the game.

Pippen was asked to elaborate during an appearance on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Monday. His response resulted in a further ripping of Jackson and eventually flowed into calling former teammate Michael Jordan selfish.

Congressman Dan Crenshaw rips Gwendolyn Berry's anthem protest: 'She should be removed'

Gwendolyn Berry said the playing of  following her third place finish in the hammer throw at U.S. Olympic track and field trials on Saturday felt like “a setup.”

The previously outspoken thrower added: “I feel like they did that on purpose.”

As she stood on the podium and the national anthem unexpectedly played, she turned away from the American flag and placed a T-shirt that read “Activist Athlete” over her head.

One U.S. congressman said Berry, and other athletes who follow suit with such demonstrations, should be kicked off Team USA.

“We don’t need any more activist athletes,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) said during an appearance on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends” Monday. “She should

'We're going to have to get used to this': Pacific Northwest scorched in dangerous, record-breaking heat wave

Records set and broken in one city. A more-than-century-old marker shattered in another.

Over the weekend, the entirety of the Northwest baked under triple-digit temperatures –and the history-making heat wave was set to continue Monday.

On Sunday, Portland, which hit 112 degrees Fahrenheit, reached its highest temperature since the National Weather Service  started record-keeping in 1940. On Saturday, Portland began its record-breaking streak as it hit 108, just over the previous record for Oregon’s largest city of 107 degrees set in 1965 and 1981.

South of the city,Salem smashed its heat record Sunday, reaching a sweltering 113 degrees. The previous record of 108 degrees was set in 1981, 1941 and 1927, according to David Bishop, a meteorologist with NWS Portland. The city of Eugene also broke

After she heard about women living on the streets, one neighbor devised a plan to help

When Beth Messick began to learn about human trafficking in 2015, she wondered why women caught in the cycle of prostitution, addiction and homelessness would not seek out organizations created to help them.

Messick took to the streets to find the answer.

“I heard about a woman on the streets in Greenville, (South Carolina),” says Messick, who had worked with women who experienced childhood sexual abuse.

The woman was in a neighborhood near a now-closed elementary school. Messick’s father was principal there for nearly 40 years.

“I told my husband, Ron, ‘I’m going to go find this girl,’” She told him that she would go, with or without him. “He went with me,” Messick

SURFSIDE, Fla. — Rescuers sifting through the debris of a collapsed Florida condo building continued their meticulous work Monday as town officials held onto hope of finding survivors in the rubble.

The death toll from the collapse rose to 10 after first responders pulled an additional body from the site on Monday, said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. Four were pulled from the rubble Sunday.

Levine Cava said 151 people remain unaccounted for.

Town officials and fire personnel reiterated during a Monday morning news conference that first responders were still in a search and rescue operation.

“They’re out there with every resource that they need to ensure that they can search this area,” Levine Cava said.

WASHINGTON – At the height of last summer’s protests for racial justice, Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff, unloaded on former President Donald Trump on how to handle unrest accompanying the demonstrations, a new account reveals.

In excerpts from an upcoming book by The Wall Street Journal’s Michael Bender, as detailed by Axios, a confrontation between Trump and Milley over how to manage the protests reached a boiling point, with Trump shouting expletives at the military’s top adviser to the president.

During a Situation Room meeting including Trump, Milley, former Attorney General Bill Barr and Defense Secretary Mark Esper, Trump called for invoking the Insurrection Act. He designated Milley

Supreme Court declines to hear Virginia school board's transgender bathroom case

0

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on Monday declined to wade into a dispute over whether schools may bar transgender students from using a bathroom that reflects their gender identity, permitting a lower court ruling against those prohibitions to stand.

At issue in the case was whether federal anti-discrimination law applied to LGBTQ students. Gloucester County School Board in Virginia argued its policy of requiring transgender students to use unisex bathrooms was permitted under a 50-year-old law that prohibits discrimination at schools that receive federal funding.

By not taking the case, the Supreme Court without comment let stand a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit that found
