Five people, including the parents of an Albuquerque police officer, are dead after a hot air balloon crashed into a power line Saturday morning in New Mexico.

The hot air balloon with five people aboard struck a power line about 6 miles west of the Albuquerque International Sunport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the crash. The balloon’s basket caught fire after crashing into the median of a busy street.

The crash caused power outages in the area, according to a tweet from the Albuquerque Police Department. Police spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos said the multi-colored balloon skirted the tops of power lines, knocking out power to more than 13,000 homes.

What is considered middle class? It might take more money than you think to reach this income tier. The Pew Research Center defines middle class, or middle-income households, as those with incomes that are two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income.

State Lawmakers Approve Bill That Aims To Get Oregon To 100% Clean Energy By 2040

Oregon lawmakers this week approved what’s been described as the nation’s most ambitious clean electricity standard, targeting 100% emissions-free power for the state by 2040.

The state Senate on Saturday passed House bill 2021, known familiarly as the 100% Clean Energy for All bill, by a 16-12 vote. The legislation was approved in the state House on Friday. It now heads to the desk of Gov. Kate Brown, a Democrat who is expected to sign it.

Under the bill, Oregon aims to transition entirely to emissions-free electricity by 2040. The legislation lays out a timetable for the state’s two major power companies — Portland General Electric and Pacific Power — to reduce

Opinion: Simone Biles is going to push the limits of gymnastics – no matter what the judges say

ST. LOUIS — If gravity can’t hold Simone Biles down, good luck to the International Gymnastics Federation.

Biles brought back her double twisting, double somersault dismount on balance beam for the first time in almost two years at the Olympic trials Friday night. That’s the skill so ridiculously difficult no other woman even tries it. But the FIG, in its infinite wisdom, refuses to give it accurate credit because it doesn’t want to give other, less capable gymnasts any ideas.

“I can do it, and it’s still an upgrade and it’s safe,” Biles told USA TODAY Sports in April. “It doesn’t add too much start value to my routine, but I’m capable

Black activists travel the South to push for voting protections, honor Freedom Riders

RICHMOND, Va. – Hannah Gebresilassie felt the weight of history when she boarded earlier this week a bus full of voting rights activists traveling from Georgia to Virginia. Sixty years ago, civil rights activists had also traveled by bus through the South in their fight for a more equal society.

The 30-year-old activist from Atlanta understood she was riding in the shadow of Freedom Riders.

“It’s been a liberating, emotional experience to know that the people who came before us paved the way,’’ said Gebresilassie, co-founder of Protect the Vote GA.

Gebresilassie was among a group of activists, faith leaders and civil rights advocates who joined the Black Voters Matter bus trip in recent days to fight to protect voting rights and commemorate

'Grievance tour' or 2024 preview? Donald Trump to hold campaign-style rally in Ohio on Saturday

0

Former President Donald Trump heads to Ohio on Saturday for his first campaign-style rally since leaving the White House, an event that could signal how engaged he will be in next year’s congressional elections and possibly offer clues about whether he plans another presidential bid in 2024.

Trump’s event at the Lorain County Fairgrounds in Wellington, about a half-hour southwest of Cleveland, will mark his return to the kind of mass rallies that fueled his White House campaigns. Since he left office in January, Trump’s public appearances have been limited to a handful of speeches before conservative and Republican groups.

Police expect Marilyn Manson to turn himself in to authorities on assault charges

Marilyn Manson is expected to turn himself in to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, has a warrant out for his arrest in Gilford, New Hampshire, and faces two counts of Class A Misdemeanor Simple Assault. Manson’s lawyers have reached an agreement for the musician to turn himself in to Los Angeles authorities to face the warrant, police say.

Gilford Police Chief Tony Burpee in a statement to USA TODAY said his department’s prosecutor will forward the warrant to the LAPD detective who will then arrange a specific date and time for Manson to turn himself in.

“We have been in a holding pattern,” Burpee said in a statement.

'Critical to everyone's safety': TSA resumes self-defense training amid uptick of unruly passengers

0

It’s been a rough year for some Transportation Security Administration employees.

Air travel is picking back up to pre-pandemic levels, but the number of incidents with violent passengers has increased in tandem. The Federal Aviation Administration has initiated nearly 500 investigations into “unruly passenger” incidents so far this year, more than three times the total number in 2019.

The TSA called the incidents “troubling” in a Thursday statement, adding the agency reported similar incidents at checkpoints across the country. To help deter assaults, the agency is bringing back self-defense training for flight crews.

Preparing for the worst

The training, which was on pause due to COVID restrictions, is led by federal air marshals and is
