Vice President Kamala Harris, tasked with stemming migrant flow, will visit US-Mexico border Friday

0

WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris will be visiting the U.S.-Mexico border Friday, following months of pressure from Capitol Hill to visit the region, according to the White House.

Harris, who was tasked with dealing with the root causes of migration from Central America, will be visiting El Paso, Texas, alongside Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The visit will come days before former President Donald Trump also heads to the U.S.-Mexico border on June 30. Earlier this month, Trump said he accepted an invitation from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to visit the border. Abbott, a Republican, recently announced that Texas will build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, and put forward

'Hero' John Hurley, Officer Gordon Beesley victims of shooting spree in Arvada, Colorado

John Hurley is a “true hero” whose actions during a Colorado shooting spree this week probably saved other people’s lives while sacrificing his own, Arvada police say.

Police Chief Link Strate provided few details of Hurley’s involvement with the shooting Monday in the suburban Denver city’s historic Old Town district. Officer Gordon Beesley was shot and killed; the suspected gunman also died.

Police said the shooting appeared to be an ambush targeting Beesley. Hurley, 40, drew praise for coming “into the Old Town area in the middle of a shooting” and preventing further violence. The shooter and Hurley appeared to have no prior connections, police said.

“He is a true hero and likely disrupted what could have

Supreme Court balks at automatic warrantless searches when police are in 'hot pursuit' for lesser crimes

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to give police the automatic power to enter homes without a warrant when they’re in “hot pursuit” for a misdemeanor crime, ruling against an officer who charged a man with DUI after slipping under his garage door.

The case involved a California man whom a police officer attempted to pull over 100 feet from his driveway. Instead of stopping his car, the man drove into his garage and shut the door – later claiming he didn’t see the patrol car behind him. The officer entered the man’s garage, questioned him and charged him with DUI.

The court’s ruling was unanimous, but several justices wrote concurring opinions to

CDC panel to review safety of vaccinations for children; 900 Secret Service agents have tested positive: Latest COVID-19 updates

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention panel is meeting today to weigh the risks versus the benefits of COVID-19 vaccinations for young adults after reports of heart inflammation among a small number of teen vaccine recipients.

The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration had confirmed – as of June 14 – 323 cases of myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, or pericarditis, inflammation of the sac that surrounds the heart, in people younger than 30 who had received either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. That’s out of more than 310 million doses administered in the U.S.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices said in May that the “relatively few” reports of myocarditis “appear to be mild”

“While this remains a confidential personnel matter … we feel she will add great value to the Carolina campus,”

Michigan Republican-led investigation rejects Trump's claim that 2020 election was stolen

DETROIT – An investigation led by Michigan Republican lawmakers found no basis for claims by former President Donald Trump and his allies that there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election, a Michigan Senate report released Wednesday concludes.

The results of the inquiry by the Michigan Senate Oversight Committee, chaired by a Republican and comprised of a GOP-majority, are the latest repudiation of conspiracy theories and lies revolving around Michigan’s election results.

“The Committee found no evidence of widespread or systemic fraud in Michigan’s prosecution of the 2020 election,” the report states.

“Citizens should be confident the results represent the true results of the ballots cast by the people of Michigan.”

As gun violence soars, Biden to target rogue dealers, illegal firearms in new crime strategy

WASHINGTON —  President Joe Biden is launching a crime prevention strategy Wednesday in a push to take on soaring gun violence as Republicans blame the rise in crime on calls from progressive activists to cut police funding.

In a White House speech Wednesday, Biden will announce a “zero tolerance policy” for rogue gun dealers and steps to stop the illegal trafficking of firearms, according to senior administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Biden will also emphasize that cities and states can use their portions of $350 billion in direct aid from Biden’s COVID-19 rescue plan, approved by Congress in March, on public safety efforts including hiring more police officers.

Derek Chauvin faces up to 30 years in prison in Friday sentencing for murder of George Floyd

More than a year after George Floyd took his last breath, the ex-cop who murdered him will face a Minnesota judge Friday and receive a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, has sat in a maximum-security prison cell since a jury found him guilty of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter April 20. Chauvin, who has never expressed remorse for Floyd’s death, will have the opportunity to speak for the first time at the hearing.

Though he’s a first-time offender, Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill found that Chauvin should face a higher sentence because his crimes involved abusing his position of trust and authority and killing

‘Exactly what cinema should be’: readers on their films of 2021 so far

‘Exactly what cinema should be’: arthurpoppy

I really would recommend In the Heights. It’s not a perfect film and it is overlong, but some of the songs and set pieces are as much fun as I’ve had watching a film in a long time. The cast is perfect and it just brings a smile to the face. The right amount of joy we all need in this grim time we’re in.

I saw it in a Picturehouse in London and the experience of that itself was great. I didn’t know the show at all, but other audience-members clearly did. There were lots of tears, lots of singing, and cheers. Walking out,
