GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – A 53-year-old woman died over the weekend at the Grand Canyon from what officials believe was a heat-related illness.

The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report at around 1:15 p.m. Sunday that a backpacker was experiencing heat illness on the Tonto Trail near Monument Creek, the Grand Canyon National Park said in a news release.

Michelle Meder of Hudson, Ohio, became “disoriented and later unconscious” while hiking down the Hermit Trail on Saturday during a multiday backpacking trip through the area, the park said.

Responding rangers found Meder dead on Sunday. The high temperature at Phantom Ranch, where Bright Angel Trail is located, was 115 degrees on

Senate fails to advance sweeping voting rights bill aimed at expanding early voting, registration

WASHINGTON – The Senate failed to advance a sweeping voting rights bill Tuesday, stalling the Democratic legislation aimed at countering recent restrictive state measures pursued in Republican-led states.

The Senate failed to advance the For the People Act to the floor for a debate. In a vote of 50-50, it fell short of the 60 needed to overcome a GOP filibuster. All Democratic Senators voted to begin debate, and the Republicans unanimously voted to block it.

The For the People Act is largely hailed by Democrats as being necessary because Republican-led states have introduced a slew of new voting restrictions that civil rights groups fear could suppress the vote for marginalized groups and make it harder to vote overall.

The legislation aims to

Travel is back, and so are airline fees: Frontier adds 'COVID recovery' charge

0

Budget airline Frontier has started passing along some COVID safety costs to passengers, even as the airline has quietly stopped taking passenger temperatures before each flight.

The Denver-based airline, known for bargain tickets and a pile of extra fees, added a $1.59 “COVID recovery charge” in May, spokesman Zach Kramer said.

The airline’s website says the charge offsets costs such as increased sanitation and cleaning on its planes and at the airport, shields at the ticket counters and in gate areas and personal protective equipment for employees. The charge is per passenger, per one-way flight and is not easy to find when booking a flight on Frontier’s website.

What the website doesn’t mention: Frontier last week ended passenger temperature

WASHINGTON – Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif, told Democratic House members Tuesday she will create a select committee to probe the January 6 attack and insurrection, a source familiar told USA TODAY.

After USA TODAY and several other outlets reported on her announcement, Pelosi’s spokesman, Drew Hammill, later tweeted, “Clarification on tonight’s meeting of the Steering and Policy Committee. Speaker Pelosi told Members she plans to announce WHETHER she will create a select committee THIS WEEK. Her preference continues to be a bipartisan commission which Senate Republicans are blocking.”

Details of a select committee are not yet known. It would not require Republican support to establish, but they could still have some representation on the committee.

A new film trailer has many Twitter users wanting to speak with Hollywood’s manager.

On Thursday, a trailer was released for the upcoming film “Karen,” which stars “Orange Is the New Black” alum Taryn Manning as a woman who terrorizes her Black neighbors. Coke Daniels wrote and directed the BET original film, described on IMDb as a crime drama thriller.

In the trailer, Manning’s Karen chides her neighbors to keep trash cans off the curb, threatens to speak with a restaurant manager about noisy patrons and appears to call the police on teenagers. At one point, one of the characters discovers a soap dispenser bearing the Confederate flag.

Following the trailer’s release, people have criticized the film on Twitter for having a contrived similarity to Jordan Peele’s horror
