Joanne Linville, who made a memorable “Star Trek” appearance as a Romulan commander in the original TV series, died Sunday in Los Angeles. She was 93.

In a statement to USA TODAY, her family said Linville “lived a full life.”

“One whose spirit, passion for art and life was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing her,” the statement continued. “A loving mother and proud grandmother.”

U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., has defended his affiliation with an exclusive beach club after a reporter, describing the membership of the club as “all white,”  questioned him about it.

Whitehouse is a longtime member of Bailey’s Beach Club, formally known as the Spouting Rock Beach Association. The association is “an exclusive private beach club in Newport, Rhode Island,” according to its employment page.

After being questioned about his membership and the racial makeup of the club, Whitehouse on Friday told a reporter from GoLocal Providence, “I think the people who are running the place are still working on that,” referring to diversifying membership. “I’m sorry it hasn’t happened yet.”

Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib made history Monday by coming out as the first active openly gay NFL player.

Nassib made the announcement in an Instagram post.

Three people, including a police officer, were killed in a shopping district in a Denver suburb Monday, the latest high-profile shooting in Colorado this year.

Police responded to a suspicious incident in Arvada’s Olde Town Square in the afternoon, Ed Brady, the deputy chief of the Arvada Police Department, said at a news conference. 

About 15 minutes later, a 911 call came in about shots fired, Brady added.

A veteran police officer and a suspected gunman were killed in the shooting, according to Brady. A “Samaritan,” believed to have been shot by the gunman, was taken to a hospital and died, he said.

The names of the victims and the suspect have not been released. Authorities didn’t immediately describe the circumstances of
