10 Modern Luxuries That Wouldn’t Exist Without Black Inventors

0

Even though a full-throated appreciation for Black History Month is an important endeavor for anyone who loves history and wants to practice anti-racism, we often place importance squarely on the past, rather than on how that past informs our present. But the truth is that so many past contributions by Black Americans have a massive role in our day-to-day lives, from the way we use the internet to communicate to how we transport food and medicine. Below, a handful of the modern luxuries—from Zoom calls to GIFs to curtain rods and more—that wouldn’t exist without the visionary minds of Black scientists, engineers and other creators.

Crime Scene: the Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel review – not spooky, just desperately sad

0

What is the point of true-crime documentaries? This is the uncomfortable question that those of us who consume them by the bucketload must sooner or later confront. If it’s just someone else’s suffering dressed up as diverting entertainment, then that can’t be OK, can it? But if there is also the possibility that these documentaries might illuminate an important aspect of cultural history, or human psychology, or even prevent future suffering by bringing perpetrators to justice, then there is some value to our viewing, after all.

The case that is the focus of Netflix’s latest true-crime docuseries, Crime Scene: the Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, has the potential to do

Napster to make debut on London stock market this month

Napster is to make its debut on the London stock market later this month, marking the first time the music streaming pioneer has had its own public listing in a chequered 22-year history.

Napster, which will start trading on the Alternative Investment Market from 26 February, is listing in London as a result of the company’s $70m (£53m) reverse takeover by a British music tech startup last summer.

MelodyVR, which films and streams gigs fans watch with virtual reality headsets, said on Monday that it is raising up to £10m to fund the expansion of the streaming business, and plans to rebrand as Napster after the company’s general meeting later this

Show Your Love with Chocolate

Oh, February.

The month of love. Coming off of a year full of heaviness and hard times, I’m ready for a year focused on the lighter moments and sweet, carved-out pieces of time with loved ones. My favorite way to show love to all my friends and family is in the kitchen. There’s nothing better than spending time baking or cooking something that I know my loved ones will enjoy. This month, challenge yourself to take some time to create something for you or for your favorite people, and make it into a ritual that reflects the love you’re putting into it. We all need more of that.

Is Robinhood the best investing app? See how it stacks up against 2 rivals

Investing your hard-earned money can be intimidating, especially if you’re new to the game.

But thanks to a slew of new mobile investment tools, the market is no longer reserved only for the stock-savvy and the ultra-rich.

If you follow the news, you probably know about Robinhood, which was the investing app of choice for the people on Reddit who recently went on a frenzy buying up stock in the video game store GameStop.

But Robinhood doesn’t have the mobile investing field all to itself. Rivals Stash and Acorns also make it

What is QAnon? What to know about the baseless, far-right conspiracy theory connected to Marjorie Taylor Greene

0

The House voted Thursday to remove Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee posts, once again thrusting the baseless and dangerous QAnon conspiracy theory into the spotlight.

Greene has previously expressed support for QAnon and other outlandish and false theories about mass shootings. She has also used violent and xenophobic rhetoric targeted at minorities and Democrats.

Groups that track the spread of the QAnon and its harmful effects say Greene has repeatedly backed the theory and called Q, the anonymous poster that is behind it, a “patriot.”

Greene said on the House floor Thursday, however, that she regretted her past social media posts. “These were words of the past,

Bubbles, GameStop, and Political Opportunism

0

GameStop’s trip to the moon has run into what members of a more laconic generation would have described as a “problem,” but the “rational bubble” that was the almost inevitable result of the way that the Fed has helped suppress interest rates (meaning that investors are forced to look somewhere, anywhere for return) looks less and less rational as the weeks go by. Meme stocks! Electric vehicles! SPACs! Junk bonds! Dogecoin! And there are many more bubbles to choose from.

Sooner or later, most or of all of them are likely to burst. If that happens, the situation will be made much more treacherous by the increase in direct

Bankruptcy Judge Lets Tyson Feed 54,000 Cows Amid Ranch Feud

0

(Bloomberg) — A U.S. bankruptcy judge protected a much-needed cash infusion for Easterday Ranches Inc., helping ensure that its 54,000 cattle will continue to eat.

The cattle farm in Washington state filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Monday after its only customer, Tyson Fresh Meats Inc., sued for more than $200 million, claiming it was being billed for the upkeep of bovines that don’t exist, court papers show. Tyson slashed payments to the ranch, and Easterday quickly ran low on cash, threatening its ability to feed the animals.

The business projects it will run out of cattle feed on Thursday, according to court papers. But Tyson has agreed to

What will Amazon founder Jeff Bezos do next?

A quarter of a century after he founded Amazon in a Seattle garage, Jeff Bezos announced this week that he is preparing to loosen his grip on the $1.7tn (£1.2tn) company. The billionaire – who until he was recently overtaken by Tesla’s Elon Musk was the world’s richest person – will this summer pass the reins to top lieutenant Andy Jassy and Bezos will become executive chairman.

Few employees in the sphere conservatories at Amazon’s sprawling Seattle campus headquarters reckon Bezos will relinquish much of his iron grip on the company’s day-to-day decision making. But Bezos, 57, told his 1.3 million employees (who he refers to as “fellow Amazonians”) that
