Beat the Heat with These Air-Conditioned Activities in Seattle

Must Read

Seattle might not see many truly scorching days each year, but when they happen, they tend to happen all at once. One day the weather is in the 60s and raining; the next it feels like the Sound itself is evaporating. Rather than melting away in your home pretending that your window fan is making a difference, consider taking refuge somewhere that has ice-cold air conditioning. There’s no need to rack your withered, heat-stroked brain thinking of places to go for respite; look no further than this roundup of some of our favorite spots around the city to stay cool. Just don’t forget to pack some water for the journey to and from!

ACTIVITIES

Garage Billiards & Bowl
Billiards, bowling, bars, oh my! Capitol Hill’s Garage offers all three under one roof, with 25 pool tables, 20 bowling lanes, and several bars scattered throughout the multi-level space. Kids are welcome to enjoy the activities before 7 pm, but Garage shifts to 21+ at night for a fun, nightlife vibe. Talk a little smack and enjoy friendly competition at the pool tables, on the bowling lanes, or even playing arcade games—DDR anyone? The barcade offers a full food menu that includes tacos, pizza, and milkshakes so you can stay fueled late into the night. SHANNON LUBETICH

Kraken Community Iceplex
When Seattle temps head toward the 80s, few activities sound as enticing as spending an afternoon inside a building that has three NHL-sized ice rinks. While the Kraken Community Iceplex might be best known as the practice space of our city’s hockey team, it’s just as much a community hub as it is a professional training facility, hosting everything from public skate sessions and themed skate nights to figure skating, adult hockey leagues, and learn-to-play programs for aspiring puck chasers. Even if your skating skills begin and end with lacing up blades and clinging to the rails, the Iceplex also features a Starbucks, the 32 Bar & Grill, and plenty of seating for cooling off with what’s very likely some of the coldest AC in Seattle.
