The federal government last month topped up funding for the Regional Tariff Response Initiative with an additional $1.5 billion in supports as part of a broader $7.5B package.
This includes capital earmarked for businesses in British Columbia, a region rich with entrepreneurship and innovation.
Pointing to key regional sectors such as advanced manufacturing, life sciences, and clean technology, Canada describes B.C. as ” one of Canada’s most dynamic economic regions.”
The government is seeking to help B.C. businesses navigate ongoing economic uncertainty through the RTRI.
“B.C. businesses are the backbone of our economy,” says Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Gregor Robertson, “and many are facing real pressures from tariffs and trade uncertainty.”
Through the RTRI, eligible businesses can access up to $3 million in non-repayable support, including up to $2 million for liquidity support and up to $1 million for pivot projects.
Repayable support over $1 million is also available for businesses undertaking larger transformation projects, according to Robertson.
“Through the enhanced Regional Tariff Response Initiative, the Government of Canada is providing new, non-repayable liquidity support to help businesses strengthen supply chains, improve productivity, and pursue new market opportunities,” he stated.
“By investing in B.C. businesses, workers and communities, we are protecting jobs, supporting long-term growth, and building Canada strong,” the minister remarked.
Delivered by Canada’s Regional Development Agencies, the four-year Regional Tariff Response Initiative is part of the Government of Canada’s strategy to defend Canadian jobs, industries, and supply chains.
In response to tariffs from the U.S., the Government of Canada has so far announced a total of $25 billion in countermeasures.
