A 59-year-old Federal Way man faces a domestic violence first-degree murder charge for allegedly shooting his wife in the bathroom of their home as she called 911.

King County prosecutors charged Clayton Gary Munson on Nov. 2 for the Oct. 28 killing of Ursula Munson, 59. Ursula Munson died from two gunshot wounds to the right side of her head, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Clayton Munson is scheduled to be arraigned on Nov. 12. Munson remains in custody at the King County Correctional Facility in Seattle with bail set at $5 million, according to jail records.

Because the victim called 911 at the time of the incident, the defendant’s actions were audio recorded, according to charging documents. At the beginning of the call, Ursula Munson states that her husband is attacking her and that he has a revolver in their home at 2912 SW 342nd Place.

There are sounds of a struggle as she continues to scream, according to charging papers. Clayton Munson can be heard loudly yelling for his keys. After the sound of the first gunshot, the victim can briefly be heard as she continues to scream.

There is then an additional pause before the second gunshot is heard.

Prosecutors wrote that Ursula Munson had attempted to lock herself in a bathroom in her home while she was calling 911 for help, but her husband reportedly was able to force open the door and then shoot her twice in the head.

Clayton Munson then fled the scene. It is unknown where he went or what he did for about the next eight hours between when he shot his wife and when he entered a Safeway store in Des Moines, 27035 Pacific Highway S., about 7 miles from the shooting, according to charging documents.

Clayton Munson requested a Safeway employee to call 911 on his behalf at about 4:41 p.m Oct. 28. He told the 911 call-taker that he was “reporting information connected to a crime in Federal Way” that happened “this morning,” according to charging papers. When asked for the address where this crime occurred, he provided his residential address.

When asked what happened at this address, Clayton Munson responded that he was “not sure of the nature of what happened.”

When officers arrived and contacted him, he was no longer in possession of a firearm. Police were unable to locate a firearm in or near the home.

Ursula Munson called 911 at about 8:21 a.m. Oct. 28. The phone line remained open until Federal Way Police officers arrived at about 8:30 a.m.

Officers found Ursula Munson unresponsive in a bathroom with severe head trauma consistent with gunshot wounds, according to court documents. She was holding a cellphone in her hand when first located.

Relatives of the couple told detectives they had been married 15 to 20 years and that nobody else lived at the home.

Detectives collected Clayton Munson’s shoes and clothing and reportedly found blood stains, according to charging papers.
