Federal Way Police officers fatally shot a man Thursday evening, Sept. 10 outside the Commons Mall after he reportedly pointed a gun at officers.
At about 6:40 p.m., Federal Way Police received multiple 911 calls about a man pointing a gun at people in the parking lot outside the mall, 1928 S. Commons, according to a Sept. 11 press release from the Valley Independent Investigative Team. Officers arrived and attempted to make contact with the man. He then reportedly pointed a gun at officers, and the officers discharged their weapons.
Officers and medical personnel provided aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The King County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the man’s identity and official cause of death.
No officers or members of the public were injured.
As per protocol, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. The number of officers involved was not released.
The suspect was described as a white male in his 20s or 30s, according to a Sept. 10 Federal Way press release. One caller reported that the subject stated he was waiting for the police.
The Valley Independent Investigative Team is composed of the Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Port of Seattle, Renton and Tukwila police departments and the King County Sheriff’s Office. Federal Way is not part of this investigation because its officers were involved.
