Innovation UBC has appointed Ian Bell as Associate Director, Innovation Partnerships, adding more than 25 years of international experience in technology transfer, research commercialization, partnership development, and intellectual property strategy to the university’s innovation team.
Bell officially stepped into the role on June 1 and will focus on strengthening how UBC connects its research strengths with industry, government, and community partners.
His career has spanned Canadian universities, provincial and federal governments, the private sector, and nearly seven years internationally co-leading the valorization team at a Dutch government-funded oncology institute. He has also helped build partnership infrastructure at the Oncode Institute in the Netherlands, experience he says will inform his work at UBC.
In a Q&A published by Innovation UBC, Bell described the university as a “rich place to work,” pointing to its scale, research quality, and global reputation as major advantages. He noted that UBC is sought out for research collaborations, licensing opportunities, and spin-off companies, and said Innovation UBC’s proactive structure gives the office an advantage in supporting faculty as they move research toward impact.
Bell also identified access to capital as one of the biggest challenges facing Canadian research commercialization. While strong technology can still attract support, he said funding institutions are stretched and competition has intensified, affecting both early-stage research and junior faculty building their labs. He also pointed to continued challenges for UBC spin-offs seeking pre-seed and seed capital.
In his new role, Bell said early priorities will include mapping UBC’s research infrastructure and expertise, identifying cross-departmental opportunities, and pursuing industry and government funding calls where the university can help build successful public-private partnerships.
He added that telling UBC’s innovation story clearly to external stakeholders will be critical, with success measured first by stronger engagement with private and public partners and, over time, the creation of multi-year, high-value partnerships.
For Vancouver’s technology ecosystem, the appointment comes as university-born innovation continues to play a central role in company creation, talent development, and commercialization across the region.
