Plant Problems

Must Read

Everyone loves a little greenery. I’ve seen some great plant displays in yoga studios, coffee shops, and therapists’ offices all over Seattle. But why in the sweet grey city of rain do we not water our plants? I’m talking droopy and yellowing monstera, ficuses shedding like crazy, and expensive-looking philodendron with deflated leaves. If having plants is part of the decor of the shop, shouldn’t taking care of the plants be part of what employees do?

I have offered to water plants for shops. This, I have learned, is an insult. I wonder if shops aren’t using water trays or plates under planters so water runs out of the pot and gets everywhere. I wonder about a lot of things in coffee shops, surrounded by stressed-out plants.

Uncle Ike’s has some scraggly-looking fuckers. Seasmith has a ton of plants and plenty of dry soil. As for who’s doing a good job, the Reef on Capitol Hill takes care of their potted and smokable plants alike.
