A man who failed to resurface after swimming in Lake Washington is still missing, the Kirkland Police Department confirmed.
The search has transitioned from a rescue operation to a recovery effort.
“The King County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit will continue searching,” the Kirkland Police Department stated.
The man was swimming with his friends offshore of Holmes Point at approximately 1:30 a.m. Saturday when he reportedly went under.
Divers with Kirkland Fire began searching the area around Holmes Point for more than an hour, with assistance from Seattle Harbor Patrol and drone resources. Then, the U.S. Coast Guard arrived and continued the search using a helicopter and a marine vessel.
“Search conditions were extremely challenging due to strong winds, rough water, and limited visibility,” the Kirkland Police Department wrote. “Officers did not observe any signs of alcohol or drug impairment among the friends who were on the boat.”
The search is continuing through the weekend.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragic incident,” the Kirkland Police Department added.
This is a developing story, check back for updates
