Less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors were selected as semifinalists to become National Merit Scholars this year, and seven Liberty High School seniors have made the cut.
Anna Chiu, Shivali Doshi, Sarah Hoki, Seraphina Law, Connor Poehlman-Kaufman, Mika Vital and Hailey Wong were among the chosen few.
Out of about 1.2 million high school juniors who took the preliminary SAT test last year, only approximately 16,000 of the top-scorers were chosen as semifinalists to win a National Merit Scholarship this coming spring.
About 95% of the named semifinalists are expected to become finalists, and about half of finalists will win one of approximately 6,7000 scholarships that are up for grabs, which total a value of about $24 million.
Winners will be announced between April and July of next year. For more information, visit www.nationalmerit.org.
