Valley Medical Cancer Center begins new construction phase

Must Read

Valley Medical Center & Clinics in Renton has been working on completing its Cancer Center, which has been under construction in stages since 2024.

On Aug. 20, the comprehensive cancer care center had its official ribbon cutting to kick off Phase 1B, where patients will begin receiving more robust care on Aug. 31.

At the ribbon cutting event, local and national cancer-related support organizations offered booths with information for guests, like Valley Breast Center, Cancer Lifeline, Blood Cancer United, American Cancer Society and Team Survivor Northwest. Guests were also offered food and beverages, along with the opportunity to meet two therapy dogs and to walk through the future spaces that are set to be completed in this new phase.

Phase 1B is described as the phase in construction which “brings together five specialty clinics into one connected space: the Oncology & Hematology Clinic, Multidisciplinary Clinic, Acute Symptom Management Clinic, High Risk Screening & Genetics Clinic and Supportive & Palliative Care Clinic.”

“Having these clinics together in one location has a significant impact—for the patient facing a new diagnosis, for the caregiver coordinating different appointments, and for the providers who can now collaborate steps apart instead of buildings apart,” said Valley Medical in a news release.

The previous phase of the center opened in February 2025, where patients were able to receive care in the Infusion Center (which was then at 40% capacity), Infusion Pharmacy, Fast Track Rooms, Acute Symptom Management Clinic and the Trapper and Samantha Wellbeing Resource Center.

The road to complete the Cancer Center has been a long one. With private funding secured and a groundbreaking ceremony on Jan. 22, 2018, followed by the completion of Parking Garage C later that year (with the Bridge of Hope connecting the garage to the Cancer Center floor) the timeline was moving along until the campaign was forced to pause in spring 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three years later, there was a relaunch of the fundraising campaign and then the beginning of construction in December 2023.

Valley Girls & Guys was the first entity to donate money to the Cancer Center with a $1.8 million check and Valley Girls & Guys founder Tina McDonough has been a major partner with the Cancer Center, having raised money for the center’s infusion chairs. At the December 2023 “skybreaking” ceremony, she talked about the people in her life who had lost their battles with cancer, including her mother.

“My mom would have been able to park in the parking garage, walked across the Bridge of Hope and come in to all the smiley faces that are going to take care of her each day and [have it all] be in one building,” she said in 2023.

Valley is now fundraising for the Cancer Center’s final phase, Phase 2, which will bring Radiation Oncology services to the 1st Floor and complete the Cancer Center.

Valley Medical Center & Clinics is located at 4009 Talbot Rd. S in Renton. To learn more, visit valleymed.org/cancercenter and to donate to the completion of the Cancer Center, visit valleymed.org/donate.
