KAST Garners Capital to Help Bolster AI Adoption Throughout Kootenays Region

In 2022, Techcouver reminded folks that even though Vancouver is the obvious and dominant hub for technology and innovation in British Columbia, other regions do nonetheless contribute to the scene.

We pointed back then to the Okanagan Valley as one example—an area which continues to thrive in 2026, having recently experienced record investment at the Okanagan Angel Summit Finale.

We also mentioned the more remote and less populated Kootenays region, where an organization maintains its mission since 1998 to “enable a vibrant, thriving, and healthy tech community” in the area.

This month, the Kootenay Association of Science and Technology garnered provincial funding for a tech-forward initiative.

British Columbia is providing $100,000 to support KAST’s Tech Edge project.

The Tech Edge initiative will aim to help Kootenay-based businesses adopt digital and AI technologies, connect with local technology providers, and build the skills needed to compete in a changing economy, according to a statement.

“Small-business owners in the Kootenays are facing challenges in a changing economy,” suggests Keith Page, municipal director for the Regional District of Central Kootenay, and councillor for Nelson.

“The productivity gains generative AI can deliver are real,” he posits. “I’ve seen it first-hand.”

“This investment will deliver real, lasting benefit to businesses across the Kootenays,” said Page.

The Kootenays “already have incredible entrepreneurial talent, innovative businesses, and technology expertise,” says Priya Biswas, executive director of KAST. “This investment helps connect those strengths, giving businesses greater access to local technology services, digital tools, and AI solutions that support growth, competitiveness, and a stronger regional economy.”

“People in rural communities are working hard to build strong businesses, create jobs, and support their local economies,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs and Economic Growth. “By investing in initiatives like this, we’re helping entrepreneurs and small business owners access new technology that can save time, reduce costs and connect them with more customers.”

“This investment will help local businesses in our region save time, grow their customer base and build the skills they need to succeed,” stated Brittny Anderson, MLA for Kootenay Central. “It’s about creating good opportunities here at home and keeping our communities strong.”

The fundings hails from The Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program, which supports economic diversification in rural communities throughout BC.

Since 2022, the Province has invested $156.5 million through REDIP, supporting more than 500 projects and creating an estimated 7,500 jobs.
