‘This vertical city is so dense, the only way to build is up’: Victor Cheng’s best phone picture

Victor Cheng describes his adopted city as “organised chaos”. The photographer, originally from Toronto but now based in Hong Kong, says that while many people have a stereotypical view of the city, based on classic kung fu movies or Rush Hour, it’s “actually quite modern, and full of skyscrapers. It’s also fast-paced; even at times when you have nowhere to be, you get caught up in the busy streets and start to feel you have to move faster!”

Despite that, Cheng says he sees the city as a “photographer’s paradise. There are so many photogenic spots and scenes.” The Yick Cheong building seen here, known colloquially as Monster Building or

The US is complicit in genocide. Let’s stop pretending otherwise | Mehdi Hasan

Can we finally stop pretending that what we have been witnessing in Gaza over the past 22 months is a “war,” a “conflict,” or even a “humanitarian crisis”? Many of the world’s leading human rights and humanitarian groups – including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Doctors Without Borders – agreed months ago that what is being livestreamed to our phones on a daily basis is indeed a genocide.

This week, Israel’s own leading human rights group announced that it had reached “the unequivocal conclusion that Israel is taking coordinated action to intentionally destroy Palestinian society in the Gaza Strip”. In other words, said B’Tselem, “Israel is committing genocide against

Germany’s ‘oldest and biggest’ gay nightclub declares bankruptcy

0

Germany’s “oldest and biggest” gay dance club has declared itself bankrupt after nearly half a century in business, falling victim to inflation and an evolving party culture threatening Berlin’s nightlife.

Management troubles and dating apps were among the factors putting SchwuZ on the ropes last year and in May the club shortened its opening hours, laid off staff and asked regulars for help to plug a growing shortfall, to little avail.

On Thursday, the management team posted on Instagram: “SchwuZ has filed for insolvency. But: we don’t want to give up!”

The post noted SchwuZ’s integral role in Berlin’s LGBTQ+ scene since it was founded in Kreuzberg in 1977, helping two years

Gear News of the Week: Insta360 Debuts a Drone Company, and DJI Surprises With an 8K 360 Camera

0

The 360 camera company Insta360 has entered the drone market with a spin-off brand called Antigravity. This new company hasn’t released a drone yet, but it’s coming soon and will likely have a slightly different take from current market leaders like DJI. Antigravity’s drone is expected to feature 360 cameras with 8K resolution. It will also fall under the 250-gram weight limit, meaning it won’t require a license.

The 360-degree camera makes sense from the company that makes our favorite 360 camera, though the usefulness of shooting straight up into the drone is questionable. Think of it as a 360 camera with about 260 degrees of

Good, mad and ugly: the US economy’s performance under Trump – in charts

According to Donald Trump’s White House, the US economy is booming, inflation is dead and jobs are surging. A blizzard of economic reports has cast a pall on such claims in recent days.

This week’s data on Trump’s early economic record was mixed – good, mad and ugly – with jobs numbers so weak he reached for the catchphrase he once used to build himself into a reality TV star: you’re fired.

The picture is chaotic, with robust headline growth in the world’s largest economy, wild swings in trade, and a remarkable slowdown in the labor market.

For six months, Trump has staged an extraordinary campaign to overhaul the global economy and

Nordic countries hit by ‘truly unprecedented’ heatwave

Cold Nordic countries are being seared by “truly unprecedented” heat, as hot weather strengthened and lengthened by carbon pollution continues to roast northern Europe.

A weather station in the Norwegian part of the Arctic Circle recorded temperatures above 30C (86F) on 13 days in July, while Finland has had three straight weeks with 30C heat.

Scientists say it is the longest streak in records going back to 1961, and 50% longer than the previous record.

“Truly unprecedented heatwave still in full swing with maximum today about 32-33C,” said Mika Rantanen, a climate scientist at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, in a social media post on Thursday. “Even the Arctic regions … have seen
