Women’s Trauma Reverberates at the Cinema This Fall

0

I’ve been thinking about the portrayal of women’s trauma onscreen this fall. It started back at the Toronto International Film Festival with “The Woman King,” directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and “Women Talking,” written and directed by Sarah Polley. I saw those movies back-to-back on a September morning. I went from seeing a woman who took her trauma and became a literal warrior leader, to seeing women who were so traumatized by the men in their community that they had to make the most difficult decision imaginable: whether they should stay amongst their abusers or leave the only homes they have ever known. And then about a month later, I

Trailer Watch: Riele Downs Throws a Ghost’s Birthday Party in “Darby and the Dead”

“Darby and the Dead” is not about your average high schooler. “Are you sitting down for this? I see dead people. I help them pass on to the next realm,” Darby (Riele Downs, “Henry Danger”) expains in a new trailer for the Hulu comedy.

Written by Becca Greene (“Good Vibes”) and Wenonah Wilms (“Horsehead Girls”), “Darby and the Dead” follows a teen who gained the paranormal ability to see and communicate with the dead following a near-death childhood experience. But to the introverted Darby, counseling lonely spirits is still less gruesome than navigating high school, where she is subjected to constant mistreatment from head cheerleader Capri (Auli’i Cravalho, “Moana”)

“The 360” shows you diverse perspectives on the day’s top stories and debates.

What’s happening

The world’s population reached an estimated 8 billion people on Tuesday, according to estimates from the United Nations.

It took just 12 years for the global population to increase from 7 billion to 8 billion, a period of unprecedented growth made possible by advances in public health, nutrition and economic development that have increased survival rates for children and allowed older generations to live longer than in the past.

“The milestone is an occasion to celebrate diversity and advancements while considering humanity’s shared responsibility for the planet,” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said.

The boom wasn’t distributed evenly around the

Pick of the Day: Bantú Mama

0

How far would you go to save your own life? How far would you go to save the life of someone you love? Deceptively minimalist in its story and action, the Dominican Republic’s official Oscar entry “Bantú Mama” is a slow burner that rewards viewers with its poignant meditations on survival, the diaspora experience, and family, both biological and found.

Clarisse Albrecht stars as Emmanuelle, AKA Emma, a Cameroonian-French embroiled in legal trouble after a botched attempt to smuggle cocaine into the Dominican Republic. After her arrest, the police car transporting Emma gets into a collision, killing the officer but sparing Emma, granting her a lifeline.
