Cinema Eye Honors: Five Women Are Up for Outstanding Direction, An All-Time High

Women directors are making history at this year’s Cinema Eye Honors. Nominations for the 16th annual nonfiction film awards are in, and for the first time ever, five women are nominated for Outstanding Direction. “Fire of Love” helmer Sara Dosa is among the nominees. Her portrait of volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft is tied for most nominations: it is up for honors in seven categories.

Tal Inbar is an independent filmmaker based in Tel-Aviv, Israel. During her studies, Inbar directed “The Home Front,” a short documentary about the Sarona terror attack, for which she won first place for student documentary at the Indian Cine Film Festival, among other awards. Inbar was also a guest speaker at a number of universities as part of the MGSDII art residency in San Diego. 

“Closed Circuit” is screening at the 2022 DOC NYC film festival, which is running from November 9-27.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently recommended that children ages 8 to 18 should be screened for anxiety disorder by their primary care physician even if they are not showing signs or symptoms of anxiety. This is the first time the task force has made any recommendation on anxiety screenings, and it speaks to the severity of the mental health crisis already ravaging children and teens in the U.S.

Kari Skogland is bringing audiences back to Wind River reservation. The Emmy-winning helmer has been tapped to direct a sequel to 2017 crime drama “Wind River,” the story of a hunter and FBI agent who team up to investigate the murder of a teenage girl on an ultra remote Native American reservation in Wyoming. Christine Yoo is a director, producer, writer, a volunteer at San Quentin State Prison, and co-founder of the San Quentin Film Festival. As a producer she has worked on non-fiction series for National Geographic, History, Oxygen, and PBS, among others. Her independent work focuses on under-served voices. Career highlights include the documentary short “A Conversation With Claudia,” a special project for P.S.1/Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), serving as co-writer of the cult anime series “Afro Samurai”, and directing, producing, and co-writing the award-winning Korean-American rom-com “Wedding Palace.” “26.2 to Life” is Yoo’s first feature documentary.

Teaser Watch: Octavia Butler’s Sci-Fi Classic “Kindred” Comes to the Screen

An aspiring writer finds herself at the center of a stranger-than-fiction story in “Kindred,” FX’s long-awaited Octavia Butler adaptation. “I was here, and then suddenly I wasn’t here,” says Dana (newcomer Mallori Johnson) in a new teaser for the sci-fi series. The young Black woman is being pulled back and forth between the present day and Antebellum times.

The spot sees Dana being ripped from her home in LA to a plantation in Maryland, where she’s chased and physically attacked. “I don’t understand what’s happening to me. Am I crazy?” she asks.
