Elwira Niewiera is a Polish director and screenwriter of documentary films such as “Domino Effect” and “The Prince and the Dybbuk.” In her artistic work, she focuses primarily on political, social, and cultural transformations in Eastern Europe. Niewiera has received many international awards for her work, including Best Documentary on Cinema at the 74th Venice Film Festival, Polish Film Academy Award for Best Documentary, Grand Prix Semaine de la critique at 75th Locarno Film Festival, Golden Dove at DOK Leipzig Film Festival, Young German Cinema Award 2019, and the Chicken & Egg Pictures Award 2021.

Mel Eslyn’s “Biosphere” Lands at IFC Films

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to “Biosphere,” producer Mel Eslyn’s feature directorial debut. A press release announced that the sci-fi comedy will be released in 2023 with streaming to follow exclusively on AMC+.

Written by Eslyn and Mark Duplass, “Biosphere” is set in the “not-so-distant future” and sees “The Morning Show’s” Duplass and “This Is Us” alumna Sterling K. Brown playing the last two men on Earth. The best friends — and their relationship — must evolve if they have any hope of saving humanity.

“Biosphere” premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

As a filmmaker, Fatimah Dadzie’s forte is in telling compelling stories about marginalized groups. She previously directed “success stories,” about the reproductive health of adolescent girls. “Fati’s choice” is her first documentary film. It was awarded best feature film at the 2021 Global Migration Film Festival  and won the Audience Award at the 2022 Filmfest Eberswalde Provinziale.

Inside Out Announces Winners of 2022 RE:Focus Fund

The Inside Out Film Fest has named the eight recipients of its annual RE:Focus Fund for women, non-binary, and/or trans filmmakers telling stories about 2SLGBTQIA+ folks. According to Deadline, this year’s selections include feature, episodic, and short projects coming from Canada, the U.S., Chile, Malta, and the U.K.

Launched in 2018, the RE:Focus Fund aims to address inequities in the entertainment industry and “respond to the immediate needs of filmmakers,” working to “eliminate barriers to career advancement,” per the source. It has distributed over $200,000 in festival travel grants and professional development programs since its inception. Kino Lorber Acquires Nobel Prize Laureate Annie Ernaux’s “The Super 8 Years”

Kino Lorber has landed North American rights to Annie Ernaux’s autobiographical film “The Super 8 Years” (“Les années Super-8”). A press release announced that the archival documentary composed of silent Super 8 footage of her family from 1972 to 1981 will be released at the Lincoln Center December 16, six days after Ernaux is awarded with the 2022 Nobel Prize for Literature.

Directed by Ernaux and her son, David Ernaux-Briot, “The Super 8 Years” features voiceover narration from the celebrated author and highlights “the inner lives of women alongside societal and cultural changes in France from the 1960s onwards,” per its synopsis. Cate Blanchett to Receive Performer of the Year Award from Santa Barbara Film Fest

Cate Blanchett is celebrating her role as a history-making conductor in “Tár” by making history herself at Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF). The two-time Oscar winner has been named as this year’s recipient of the fest’s Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, making her the first person to receive the honor twice. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news.

Now in theaters, “Tár” sees Blanchett playing Lydia Tár, a world-renowned composer who serves as the first female chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Blanchett was previously recognized with SBIFF’s Performer of the Year Award in 2014 for her performance in “Blue Jasmine.” In 2008, she received the fest’s Modern Master Award.

Sharon Horgan’s “Bad Sisters” Renewed for Season 2 at Apple TV+

DOC NYC 2022 Preview: Social Justice Reckonings, Cirque du Soleil, & More

Set to take place November 9-27, this year’s edition of DOC NYC film festival promises to enlighten, entertain, inspire, and provoke. Programming includes exciting titles from first-time directors and gems from industry vets. Some of the films we’re most looking forward to address systemic racism (“Gumbo Coalition”), pay homage to local legends (“Queen of the Deuce”), and take us back in time (“A Witch Story”).

European Film Award (EFA) nominatons are in, and women are set to compete for the ceremony’s top honors. Two of six helmers in the running for European Director are women: Marie Kreutzer for “Corsage,” a biopic about Empress Elisabeth of Austria, and Alice Diop for “Saint Omer,” a portrait of a journalist attending the trial of a woman accused of infanticide.

“Corsage” is one of five titles up for European Film. Carla Simón’s “Alcarràs,” a drama about a family of peach farmers in a small village in Catalonia, also scored a nod. Simón and Arnau Vilaró are up for European Screenwriter as well.
