The United States Should Have a Turkey on Its Great Seal

Here is something you may not know. It occupies a good three pages of Jack E. Davis’s book The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird. Benjamin Franklin did not like the bald eagle and was partial to the virtues of the turkey. Franklin admitted, in a letter, that the turkey was a little “vain and silly,” and, as everyone knows, it’s also not great at flying and is hardly fierce, like the bald eagle, which is a master of one of its three meal “tables,” the sky. (The other tables being

A Top Pick Tonight: Miss Texas 1988 Teaches Sex-Ed at Optimism

A new species of dinosaur just dropped: The Clitaurus, a fetching (imaginary) creature with some particularly tender sensibilities. Clitty is the star of Clitaurus Chronicles, a sex-ed picture book for readers interested in learning more about the power of the clitoris (through lizardly metaphor). Written by sex therapist Breona Mendoza (she/her), and illustrated by filmmaker Danny Tayara (they/he/she), the publishing of Clitaurus Chronicles is celebrated with a night of storytelling and trivia at Optimism Brewing, hosted by that icon of pleasure, Miss Texas 1988. Demystify clitoral sensations, share your probing insights, or simply sit back and let the fun wash over you. Masks and

Better pick up your dry cleaning. The old dry cleaning place at Olive and Harvard is going away, to be replaced by an eight-story mass timber mixed-use building with 70 to 80 new homes and no additional parking, thank God. Sounds good so far! The developers are hosting a site walk and info session at the end of the month.

It’s not all bad news. Washington legislators weren’t able to accomplish much in this session, but they did manage to pass the world’s okayest transportation package. Ryan Packer has a full breakdown, but some highlights include a new requirement

Now that Seattle has nothing to lose when it comes to the incredibly shrinking Boeing in the Pacific Northwest, the city’s leading paper is finally free to tell it like it is: “The grabbing hands grab all that they can.” Dominic Gates writes that the “top executives” of the Chicago-based corporation “took home millions of dollars in cash pay” in 2021, despite the pandemic, despite the 737 MAX mess, despite losing $4.2 billion. For example, the CEO made out like the bandit he is: “$7.4 million in salary, cash bonus and stock awarded when” he took

Live Review: Mitski at The Moore

In the middle of The Moore’s stage, a door.

As the venue’s lights dimmed Wednesday night, the door began to glow. Smoke billowed out from behind it, and the young-ish crowd shrieked. Mitski was here—but she wasn’t behind that freaky portal. The celebrated singer-songwriter entered from the side of the stage. The crowd’s pitch got even higher as she made her way to center stage, where her band set up in a crescent formation behind her.

Mitski is currently on a mostly sold-out tour supporting her sixth and latest album Laurel Hell, stationed in Seattle at The Moore for two nights this week. The artist’s latest record finds her

Take Our Unstreamable Survey!

After highlighting over 350 movies, we’re ready to put some new energy into this thing.

We started this “Unstreamable” project about three years ago, around the beginning of the so-called streaming wars. These “wars” caused streaming services to saturate the market, which we noticed made digital libraries increasingly unstable. Some months you could watch Drop Dead Gorgeous on Hulu. Other months it was on HBO Max. Other months it was entirely offline. This battle was happening while physical media libraries became practically extinct.

Yet in Seattle, we have a miracle. Scarecrow Video is still in
