Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, “Fried Soul” (Colemine). The encouraging rise of Seattle’s Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio proves that even at this late date, old-school instrumental funk can move asses in masses large enough to make major waves in the retail and radio realms. The success of 2021’s I Told You So and the new Cold as Weiss albums testifies to the enduring appeal of the greasy grooves and disciplined virtuosity of Booker T. & the MGs, the Meters, Bar-Kays, and others of their ilk. DLO3 prove that back-to-basics moves don’t

Every other year since 2009, the Seattle Art Museum awards the Gwendolyn Knight and Jacob Lawrence Prize to an early career Black artist who “demonstrates artistic commitment and great promise.” The winner gets $10,000 in unrestricted fund$ as well as a solo exhibition in the museum’s Gwendolyn Knight & Jacob Lawrence Gallery. In 2021, the award went to Los Angeles-based mixed media artist Lauren Halsey, whose work is bright, colorful, and often architectural.

Tomorrow! It's a Free Day at Washington State Parks!

Normally, it costs about $12 for a one-day parks pass (or $30 for an annual pass) but for a few days every year the parking is free — which is another way of saying the lots may be full before you’re even up and out of bed. Or maybe not, since this year one of those free days falls on a Wednesday, which makes it a perfect opportunity to take the day off (or take advantage of remote work, and treat yourself to a full day of writing or spreadsheetery while surrounded by nature). This particular free day is in honor of Billy Frank

The Mayor’s “Holistic” Approach to Crime Does Not Yet Include Social Services

As the city scrambles to address ongoing crime and violence, Mayor Bruce Harrell struggles to fulfill his promise for a new kind of public safety response as he continues to rely heavily on police while perpetuating a long legacy of undervaluing and underpaying social service workers.

On Friday, March 4, the Mayor surrounded himself with cops and prosecutors and outlined the city’s approach to public safety in high-crime areas such as Little Saigon and 3rd and Pine. Although Harrell described his hot-spot policing strategy

New Savage Love: Lay Misérables

JOE NEWTON

I lost my lover unexpectedly last weekend. He was a long-time friend and periodic hook-up, and things were finally starting to turn as serious as I’d always secretly wanted them to be. I’m writing because I don’t know what to do with my desire for him, because that certainly didn’t die with him. He’s the only person I’ve been with in the past year and a half and re-reading our old sexts and thinking about the last time we were together has been turning me on. But I feel all sorts of torn up about masturbating to the thought of him. I want

A man matched with a woman in an ethical non-monogamous relationship. She proposed they meet at a lifestyle club. He had never heard of lifestyle clubs before and wonders if this is an elaborate scam to boost the club’s membership. Is this on the up and up?

A man started seeing a new woman, and it’s time to share his kinks. He’s into cross-dressing. (Ho hum.) And wearing maxi pads. (Oh my!) How can he tell her this without scaring her off?

Speaking of scaring people off…our “What You Got” is extra spicy today. In what must be our first combination of a “What

Why L.A. could be the last school district in America to lift its mask mandate

0

LOS ANGELES — This week, America’s largest public school district — New York City — finally lifted its COVID-19 mask mandate, allowing K-12 students to choose whether they want to cover their faces in class.

Meanwhile, America’s second-largest public school district — Los Angeles — seems likely to require masks for the rest of the school year.

The reluctance from Los Angeles Unified School District to relax its universal indoor masking measures even as Omicron numbers plummet leaves it out of step not only with New York City but with the rest of the country as well — including the state of California and even Los Angeles County itself, which includes

Spring is doing its best to defeat winter. CHARLES MUDEDE

A sign bridge in Lakewood collapsed after a white car hit one of its “support beams.” The crash and collapse, which amazingly sent no one to heaven or hell or the hospital, evidently impressed WSDOT a great deal, because a sign bridge is “an [incredibly] heavy structure.”

As if this weren’t complicated enough? This structure is what’s called a sign bridge. It spans all lanes of I-5 and the exit. It’s an incredibility heavy structure. It’s built tall enough to let all legal loads pass beneath it and hold large highway signs.

The pandemic still isn’t over: As of today, the COVID death toll has surpassed 6 million. And that’s just what’s recorded—the real number is likely much higher. However, the global daily death toll has gone down over the last month, from about 11,000 during the second week of February to 7,000 daily today, reports CNN. “It’s too early to declare victory over #COVID19,” twote WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “We urge all people to exercise caution and all governments to stay the course.”

It’s too early to declare victory over #COVID19. Many countries are facing high rates of hospitalization & death.

All Cats Are Aliens

I meow from the stars… The Cat

The scene at the heart of Ngai Choi Lam’s sci-fi horror film The Cat (also called The 1000 Years Cat) takes the old war between cats and dogs, the premier pets in the West, to a level that has no match in all of cinema. You have to see it to believe it. It happens at night in a car graveyard. The cat (named The General) attacks the dog (Lao Pu). The dog, which is hired to track down aliens, attacks the cat. The cat turns on the window wipers on a dead car. The window wipers hit the barking dog’s baggy and
