Kevin Westenberg spent decades in music photography before using his architecture degree
Photographer Kevin Westenberg got his architecture degree from Washington State University, but soon after graduation, he took a different path: music photography. First living in London and then traveling all over the world—at some points returning to his native Seattle to cover grunge—Westernberg photographed everyone from Led Zeppelin to the White Stripes. Eventually, he racked up more than 250 album covers and inclusion in the Brooklyn Museum’s “Who Shot Rock” retrospective.
A few years ago, Westenberg returned to his original plan—architecture—by remodeling his waterfront family home in Mount Baker, tucked to the side of the Interstate 90 Bridge. The result, completed with the assistance of Mount Baker Remodeling, is bright, sleek, and positively beachy.

The home looks smaller than it actually is on the outside, but walk through the front door for a large, open layout—including a living room with up-close views of the bridge and the lake. Walk out on the deck to get even closer.

The dining room has gained a window bench. Open shelving provides a little separation between here and the kitchen.

Upstairs, a couple of the home’s four bedrooms benefit from those water views.

One full bathroom with a beadboard-coated, vaulted ceiling doubles as a laundry room.

The home also includes an ADU on the lower level, which wasn’t remodeled.
Outside, the yard has been meticulously planned by landscape designer Dan Blossom, who’s also a musician.

Taking advantage of the lakefront location, the home also has a wide dock suitable for both boats and hanging out—including a dry dock.
