Gunmen have kidnapped more than 50 people in north-west Nigeria in a mass abduction, according to a private conflict monitoring report created for the UN and seen by Agence France-Presse on Sunday.

“Armed bandits” targeted the village of Sabon Garin Damri in Zamfara state Friday, the report said, the latest attack in a region where residents in rural hinterlands have long suffered gangs who kidnap for ransom, loot villages and demand taxes.

The report said this was the first “mass capture” incident in the Bakura local government area this year. “The recent trend of mass captures in Zamfara has been concerning,” it said, noting “a shift in bandit strategy toward more

The man was understood to be sitting in the upper tier of the 90,000-seat stadium – the highest stands of which are 50 metres above the ground – as the Gallagher brothers performed as part of their reunion tour.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan police said officers on duty at Wembley for the Oasis concert responded to reports that a person had been injured at 10.19pm.

White House officials rush to defend Trump after shaky economic week

Donald Trump administration officials fanned out on Sunday’s US political shows to defend the president’s policies after a bruising week of poor economic, trade and employment numbers that culminated with the firing of labor statistics chief Erika McEntarfer.

US trade representative Jamieson Greer said Trump has “real concerns” about the jobs numbers that extend beyond Friday’s report that showed the national economy added 73,000 jobs in July, far below expectations. Job growth numbers were revised down by 285,000 for the two previous months as well.

On CBS News’s Face the Nation, Greer defended Trump’s decision to fire McEntarfer, a respected statistician, saying: “You want to be able to have somewhat reliable

Israeli forces kill at least 27 at food site while minister’s al-Aqsa visit causes outrage

At least 27 people were killed by Israeli forces while trying to get food and six others died from starvation or malnutrition in Gaza on Sunday, Palestinian officials said, amid a regional outcry over an Israeli minister’s visit to Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site.

Witnesses said Israeli forces fired on hungry crowds who were attempting to get food aid from a distribution site run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in the south of the territory, with some describing the fire as indiscriminate.

“I couldn’t stop and help because of the bullets,” Yousef Abed told the Associated Press after seeing at least three people bleeding on the ground as Israeli

Woman arrested after travelling with two-year-old in suitcase in New Zealand

A New Zealand woman was arrested on Sunday after travelling on a bus with a two-year-old girl trapped in her luggage.

DI Simon Harrison said the 27-year-old woman had been charged with ill treatment and neglect of a child.

Police were called to a bus depot in Kaiwaka, 60 miles (100km) north of Auckland, after the bus driver became concerned about a bag moving during a scheduled stop.

“When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl,” Harrison said. “The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed.”

The luggage had been stored beneath the bus passengers, in a separate compartment.

On the topic of Squiban and the polka dot jersey, Beau emails in to say:

Squiban needs to make a big charge here to pick up any more points. She’s less than a minute back of the yellow jersey group, but she has to pass a lot of riders.

Good point. Also, the yellow jersey group aren’t going to knock off the pace, especially as Gigante keeps attacking.

62km to go: At the front, Van der Breggen rides her tempo – she has 1min 50secs on the yellow jersey group. But then, Gigante attacks again and quickly reduces that gap to 1min 33secs.

The kindness of strangers: out of the blue, an older woman handed me a well-thumbed book

A couple of years ago, I decided to improve myself physically and mentally. I did that by setting a couple of new year’s resolutions. One was to exercise regularly, and the other was to read a book a week. The exercise part didn’t go so well because on 1 January, I went for my first walk and stepped on a branch that punctured my leg. But my plan to throw myself into reading was much more successful.

Later that year, I was on a long train trip from Sydney to Melbourne with a friend and told him about my reading goal. I was pretty stoked with how well I was

Irate Trump tells Schumer to ‘go to hell’ after Senate standoff over confirmations

The US Senate left Washington DC on Saturday night for its monthlong August recess without a deal to advance dozens of Donald Trump’s nominees, calling it quits after days of contentious bipartisan negotiations and the president taking to social media to tell Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer to “GO TO HELL!”

Without a deal in hand, Republicans say they may try to change Senate rules when they return in September to speed up the pace of confirmations. Trump has been pressuring senators to move quickly as Democrats blocked more nominees than usual this year, denying any fast unanimous consent votes and forcing roll calls on each one, a lengthy process
